10 Ways to Stay Present in Daily Life

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in thoughts about the past or worries about the future. Fortunately, there are many simple practices that can help us reconnect with the present moment. Here are some of my favorite ways to cultivate mindfulness in everyday life.

1. Develop a Daily Yoga Practice

Any doctor will tell you that exercise is beneficial for the body, but it's also a wonderful way to stay present. While any form of exercise can help cultivate mindfulness, I find that yoga works best for me.

Personally, practicing every other day works best for my health, although I do balancing poses every day. Yoga offers many different styles, ranging from high-intensity flows to gentle chair yoga. The benefits are incredible. Yoga has been shown to improve flexibility, increase focus, reduce stress, support mental well-being, and build full-body strength.

2. Take Mindful Walks

When I walk, I set the intention to do so mindfully. I move at a slower pace than most so that I can fully enjoy nature. I often walk barefoot to feel more grounded and connected to the earth. Sometimes, if it's warm enough, I'll even walk in the rain.

I make a point to greet neighbors I encounter and occasionally stop by a nearby creek for a short meditation. My walks don't have to be long—I typically walk a little over a mile. It's not about the distance; it's about being present.

3. Write Poetry

I never imagined I would become a poet, but I've been writing poetry for nearly four years. Poetry is a beautiful outlet for expressing emotions and reflecting on life's experiences.

Not only do I write to process my feelings, but I also enjoy challenging myself with different themes and topics suggested by friends and family. Writing poetry helps me slow down, connect with myself, and stay in the present moment.

4. Play Musical Instruments

I discovered sound healing through meditation, and along the way, I was introduced to many different instruments. From crystal singing bowls to drums, each instrument has its own unique qualities and playing techniques.

Learning and playing these instruments not only supports my dexterity but also encourages me to focus fully on the present moment.

5. Practice Breathwork

Although meditation and breathwork often go hand in hand, breathwork is a practice of its own. Because of my cardiomyopathy, I have to be cautious with certain techniques, such as Breath of Fire. Fortunately, there are many breathing exercises that help me reconnect with the present moment.

One of my favorite techniques is alternate nostril breathing, which I often practice before beginning my yoga sessions. Just a few mindful breaths can make a tremendous difference in how we feel.

6. Practice Mindful Eating

I have to be very mindful of what I eat because I need to limit my protein intake and do my best to follow an anti-inflammatory diet. However, mindful eating means so much more than simply choosing healthy foods.

When I eat a meal, I rarely have my phone at the table unless I'm expecting a call. I take note of the colors on my plate and embrace the aroma of my food. Then I savor each bite. Admittedly, I don't always make it to 30 chews, but I try my best and always appreciate the flavors. Mindful eating helps me slow down and enjoy the experience of nourishing my body.

7. Journal Regularly

As mentioned above, I write poetry, but I also journal often. I make sure to use pen and paper, even though my handwriting isn't the best, because I'm always looking to improve.

I typically begin with gratitude and then write down whatever is on my mind, whether it's something positive or something I simply need to release. Journaling is a great way to empty your thoughts and declutter your mind.

8. Be Mindful of Social Media

I am very intentional about how I use social media. When I scroll, I scroll with a purpose because I enjoy keeping up with friends and followers. I avoid engaging with content that negatively affects my mindset.

I also make it a point to have periods during the day with no screen time, whether it's fifteen minutes or an hour. Taking breaks from technology allows me to reconnect with myself and the world around me.

9. Meditate Daily

My meditation practice consists of fifteen minutes in the morning after I take my medication and fifteen minutes before bed. I also try to incorporate another short session during the day, even if it's only for a few minutes.

I prefer sitting in silence and use the Insight Timer app as my timer. Meditation helps me start my day with intention and prepares me for a restful night's sleep.

10. Spend Time Gardening

Every year, I look forward to planting a garden. Gardening is the perfect grounding experience. Watching plants grow feeds my soul, not to mention the wonderful taste of fresh fruits and vegetables.

As I water their roots, my spirits are lifted. Gardening reminds me that growth takes time and that there is beauty in nurturing something with patience and care.

Final Thoughts

Staying present doesn't require hours of meditation or dramatic lifestyle changes. Simple practices like yoga, walking, writing, playing music, conscious breathing, and spending time in nature can help us reconnect with ourselves and appreciate the beauty of each moment.

After all, life happens in the present moment. The more we learn to embrace it, the more peace, gratitude, and joy we can experience.
